NY-26: The Campaign Cash of Jon Powers, Jack Davis, and Alice Kryzan

by Matt at Jul 16th, 2008

13WHAM out of Rochester did a story on the fundraising efforts of the Democratic candidates running for Congress in the 26th congressional district… and touched on something reported on by The Buffalo Bean over a month ago.

Three Democratic candidates: Jonathan Powers, Alice Kryzan and Jack Davis have raised almost $1.5 million so far in their bid for the seat in the 26th District which was vacated by Tom Reynolds.

The stakes could go a lot higher if businessman Jack Davis makes good on a pledge to spend up to $3 million of his own money.

Nearly 4,000 people have written checks to the campaign of Iraq War veteran Jon Powers.  He calls it “a grass roots effort,” pointing out that over two thirds of the donations are for $50 or less.

A closer look at financial filings shows many of those donations come from people outside Powers’ district, including areas like California, North Carolina, Ohio, Arizona and others.

According to the Open Secrets Website, which examines financial data of all national candidates, 44 percent of the money Powers raised through the last quarter comes from out-of-state, compared to 29 percent for Alice Kryzan.

Jon Powers can tout his so-called grassroots efforts all he wants, but when you consider the fact that a significant portion of his campaign cash comes from out of state, and that he raises money largely through established liberal fundraising machines like ActBlue, I wouldn’t using words like “grassroots” to describe his campaign, especially since he doesn’t have any significant name recognition.

Here are the numbers from the FEC for the 2nd Quarter:

Kryzan   2nd Quarter       (Total)

Raised - $69,453        ($259,961)
Loan -    $60,000        ($157,000)
Spent -  $88,925        ($169,686)
Cash on Hand - $247,025

Total Raised (Raised + Loan) = $412,811

Jon Powers   2nd Quarter           (Total)

Raised - $271, 936              ($869,999)
Loan -    $0                         ($0)
Spent -  $184,987                ($381,178)
Cash on Hand - $488,810

Jack Davis  2nd Quarter

Loan - $337,418
Raised: $0
Spent - $302,154.15
Cash on Hand - $35,263.85

Jon Powers should be embarrassed by his financial disclosures. What a joke. He is obviously running to be another hog at the special interest trough in Washington. More of his money is coming in from San Fransisco than Buffalo. Is there doubt in anyone’s mind that he is going to be another drone vote for Nancy Pelosi.

Jack Davis would at least be his own man.

Davis is only his own man because no one supports him.

Kryzan doesn’t even know who to support. She gave the same amount she recieved from her average supporter to Tom Reynolds yet bashes him as a bad politician?

At least Powers has individuals who give $$ compared to the other two. Lee does too… it will be an interesting Lee v. Powers election in November.
