NY-26: Why Can’t Jon Powers Defend Himself?

by Matt at Jun 19th, 2008

A few days ago, the Jon Powers campaign sent out the following email in response to an NRCC release noting how Powers’ financial support comes mostly outside of the district he claims he’ll represent.

Dear Friend,

Days after all seven Democratic County Chairs announced their unanimous support of Jon Powers, the National Republican Congressional Committee knew they needed to pounce. They know Jon is the candidate to beat and 85 days before the Democratic primary, they are already on the attack.

The NRCC put out a press release questioning our campaign’s hometown support. They claim we don’t have any. We know that’s not true.

So why is the NRCC so afraid of Jon Powers?

* They know Jon is the toughest candidate for them to beat in November.
* He is running to bring the voice of Western New Yorkers back to Washington.
* They see that 75% of the people donating to our campaign have given less than $50.

This is a dangerous combination and the NRCC worries about winning elections, not about representing Western New York. Our campaign is fueled by grassroots momentum, and powered by Western New Yorkers. Jon Powers is turning heads and Washington, D.C. Republicans are getting scared.

That sad thing about this email, besides the apparent enormous ego of Jon Powers, is that there is absolutely no rebuttal to the points made by the NRCC on Tuesday, which we blogged about here at The Buffalo Bean last week.

Powers has no explanation or rebuttal to the points made against him. Pathetic.

Powers’ only serious opponents are all self-funded. Sorry not everyone can be a millionaire, and they’re few and far-between in NY-26, as well.

This isn’t about self-funding for not. It’s about where Powers’ money is coming from which will really influence whom he would truly be representing, should he be elected. He touts his campaign’s as “grassroots” but that grass ain’t growing from within his district.
